This is a piece for Kirby and Me, a tribute book for the centennial of Jack Kirby's birth. The page will be printed in black and white. But just for fun, Terry Beatty colored it like a 1970s Marvel blacklight poster. I love it!
Once again I will be a guest at Brian Grabinski's terrific Northwest Indiana Comic-Con on Saturday, February 25th, 2017. The NWI Comic-Con is held at the Halls of St. George, 905 E Joliet St, Schererville, Indiana.
I drew a 3 page Betty Boop comic story for the February 2017 issue of Woman's Day magazine. It's their 'heart health' issue. Color by Jason Millet, lettering by Todd Klein.
I drew a particularly wacky four page story written by James Kochalka in SpongeBob Comics #62, on sale now. It's full of tales of King Neptune, and our bit has an appearance by everyone's favorite ghost pirate, the Flying Dutchman. Plus MOLDY SAMMITCHES!
Here's a peek at a cover I drew for the BATMAN/TEENAGE NINJA TURTLES comic from IDW. I'm a big fan of Bruce Timm, and it was fun to play with his take on Bats.
You can find a full-size version of the colors here on Comic Book Resources. Scroll down and click on the small image of the cover for a full-size view.
I have a number of pieces in RABID ROBOT RAMPAGE, a show of robot art by several Chicago area artists. Have a beer and buy a bot! The poster is by yours Surly, with color by Dave Punk, and features a robot designed by 10 year old artist Calvin Bosanic, and it will be available at the show.
Northdown Café and Taproom 3244 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago, Illinois
Opening: Saturday, July 23, 3PM to 6 PM Show runs 7/23 - 9/2
I drew a short story in SpongeBob Comics #56, on sale Wednesday, May 11. James Kochalka wrote this baffling battle between Plankton and Gary the snail. It's wacky.
I'll have a longer story in #57, the "Nautical Noir" issue, on sale in June.
I'll be at Artist Alley table #B2 at C2E2, Chicago's premiere comic book convention. The show is being held at McCormick Place, this weekend, March 18. 19, and 20.
I penciled the cover story to Grampa Simpson's Choose Your Own Adventure, written by Max Davison. It's due out next week, 12 /16/15. Only now it's called Grampa Simpson's Unbelievable Adventures, for boring legal reasons. Here's the hype from Bongo:
"A One-Shot Wonder unlike any that has gone before! Join Grampa Simpson as he takes you on an unbelievable tale of swashbuckling derring-do that spans the entire cosmos! It's the wildest ride Bongo Comics has ever offered. And best of all, YOU take the story wherever you want to go! The possibilities are endless and the options inexhaustible. You can't go wrong when you choose Grampa Simpson's Unbelievable Adventures!"
This is a limerick from the from the first piece I drew for Bart Simpson'sTreehouse of Horror. "The Lexicon of Lurid Limericks" consisted of an entire alphabet of putrid poems, and was co-written With Steve Sullivan, with color by Dave Stewart.
"Mars Attacks Garbage Pail Kids" is a story by me and co-writer Doug Rice, with nifty color work by Jason Millet. It appears in GARBAGE PAIL KIDS: GROSS ENCOUNTERS OF THE TURD KIND, which also features stories by Ryan Browne, Roger Langridge, Joe Simko and James Kochalka. Now that's a line-up full of disgusting potential. In shops 6/24/2015.
Just completed a story for this year's SpongeBob Comics annual. It has angry mobs of fish-men, gigantic tomatoes, and the usual four-armed dancers juggling chainsaws. Trust me, it's wacky.
